Throat & Top-Mount Damper Repair for Dallas–Fort Worth Fireplaces

Damper Installation & Repair

A damper that won’t seal costs you money every day it sits open a crack — and a damper that’s rusted shut is a safety problem the next time you light a fire. We repair and replace both throat dampers and top-mount dampers for homes across DFW, restoring the seal that keeps drafts, water, and pests out of your flue.

The Chimney Sweep has repaired and replaced fireplace dampers across Dallas–Fort Worth since 1980 — one of the most overlooked components in a chimney, and one of the most common reasons for a drafty or inefficient fireplace.

Throat Dampers vs. Top-Mount Dampers

Most older masonry fireplaces use a throat damper — a hinged metal plate just above the firebox that opens and closes with a handle or lever. Throat dampers are prone to rusting, warping, and failing to seal fully over time, and because of where they sit, they’re often difficult to repair without disturbing the firebox.

A top-mount damper (also called a top-sealing damper) installs at the very top of the flue instead, using a cable-operated seal that closes far more tightly — which is why it’s the standard replacement when a throat damper fails beyond repair. Top-mount dampers also do double duty as a chimney cap, keeping out rain, debris, and animals.

Why Dallas–Fort Worth Homeowners Need Damper Repair

Chimney Dampers \ Dampers Part | The Chimney Sweep
Energy Loss

Stops warm and cool air from leaking out

A damper that won't seal fully can account for a meaningful share of your home's heating and cooling loss — it's one of the largest air leaks in most houses.

Drafts & Odors

Keeps drafts and chimney odors out of the room

A stuck or warped damper lets outside air, and sometimes smoky odors, drift back into the house even when the fireplace isn't in use.

Water & Pests

Blocks rain, debris, and animals from the flue

An open or damaged damper leaves the flue exposed the same way a missing chimney cap does.

Fire Safety

Ensures safe, reliable operation

A damper that won't open fully restricts airflow during a fire, which can push smoke back into the room instead of up the flue.

Damper Installation & Repair Questions, Answered

If you can reach up into the firebox and feel a metal plate with a handle or lever just above the flame area, that's a throat damper. If the seal and mechanism are at the very top of the chimney instead, operated by a cable and handle inside the firebox, that's a top-mount (top-sealing) damper.

It depends on the damage. Minor warping or a stuck handle can often be repaired. Rust-through, cracked plates, or a damper that won't seal even after adjustment usually call for replacement — often with a top-mount damper, since throat dampers can be difficult to replace without disturbing the firebox.

Old throat dampers rarely seal perfectly, even in good condition, because the metal warps slightly with repeated heat cycles. If the draft is significant, a top-mount damper with a gasket seal usually solves it.

Cost depends on your flue size, damper type, and whether it's a repair or full replacement. We provide firm, written pricing after an on-site inspection.

In many cases, yes — a top-mount damper seals the flue and also blocks rain, debris, and animals the way a cap does, though we'll confirm during inspection whether your setup still needs a separate cap.

These guys are awesome, and I highly recommend them. I’ve known the owner for years, and I can tell you that this is not just a “business” to him. He truly cares that the job is done correctly so that hopefully people don’t have devastating incidents down the road. Serving his long career as a firefighter and then chief, he’s seen firsthand the losses suffered from things we might sometimes take for granted such as chimney buildup or lint in dryer vents.
