CSIA-Certified Chimney Safety Inspections for Dallas–Fort Worth

Safety Inspections

A chimney that looks fine from the outside can still be hiding a fire hazard, a carbon monoxide risk, or structural damage that only shows up during a proper inspection. We follow NFPA standards to check every component of your chimney system, not just the parts you can see from the fireplace.

The Chimney Sweep has performed chimney safety inspections across Dallas–Fort Worth since 1980, using CSIA-certified technicians and NFPA-standard inspection levels.

What a Chimney Safety Inspection Covers

Every inspection covers four areas. The exterior — cracks or damage in the masonry, chimney cap condition, mortar joint deterioration, and signs of water damage. The interior flue — creosote buildup, liner cracks or damage, blockages from debris or nests, and proper ventilation. The fireplace and firebox — firebrick condition, damper and smoke chamber function, and signs of moisture or rust. And finally, smoke and gas leak testing — confirming smoke vents properly and there’s no carbon monoxide leaking into your home.

Why Dallas–Fort Worth Homeowners Need Regular Inspections

checking the cleanliness of the chimney using a drone.
Chimney Fires

Creosote buildup is a leading cause

Creosote is highly flammable, and it's one of the most common things we catch before it becomes a fire risk.

Carbon Monoxide

A blocked or damaged chimney can leak CO

A hidden crack or blockage can let dangerous gases seep into your living space without any visible warning.

Structural Damage

Catch it before it gets expensive

Water damage, shifting, and general wear are far cheaper to fix when caught early.

Code & Resale

Required for many home sales and city codes

Many cities require annual inspections, and most home sales require a chimney safety check before closing.

Our Chimney Inspection Levels

We offer three levels of inspection based on NFPA standards, matched to your situation.

01.

Level 1: Basic Safety Inspection

Ideal for annual maintenance — checks basic chimney components (flue, fireplace, damper, cap) and confirms there's no major blockage or damage.

02.

Level 2: Real Estate or Post-Damage Inspection

Required for home sales, property transfers, or after recent damage — includes video scanning of the chimney interior to confirm structural integrity and code compliance.

03.

Level 3: Extensive Damage Inspection

For chimneys with severe structural damage or a fire history — may involve removing parts of the chimney or nearby walls to determine if major repair or replacement is needed.

04.

Exterior & Interior Review

Every level includes a check of masonry, cap condition, mortar joints, flue liner, firebox, and damper function.

05.

Smoke & Gas Leak Testing

We confirm smoke is venting properly and there's no carbon monoxide leaking into your home before calling the inspection complete.

If your inspection turns up a specific issue, it may lead to our chimney repair, relining, or camera inspection services for a closer look.

When You Should Schedule an Inspection

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends an annual inspection regardless of these signs — most chimney hazards aren’t visible until someone’s specifically looking for them.

Chimney Safety Inspection Questions, Answered

Level 1 is a basic visual check for annual maintenance. Level 2 adds video scanning and is required for home sales or after damage. Level 3 is the most thorough, used for chimneys with severe damage or a fire history, and may involve accessing concealed areas.

The CSIA recommends an annual inspection for every chimney, regardless of how often it's used.

Most home sales require at least a Level 2 inspection, since it documents the chimney's condition for the buyer, their lender, or their insurer.

Yes — this is exactly why NFPA standards call for checking the flue interior, not just what's visible from the firebox or roof. A camera inspection can catch damage a visual check alone would miss.

Cost depends on the inspection level needed. We provide firm, written pricing before scheduling, based on your chimney and situation.

These guys are awesome, and I highly recommend them. I’ve known the owner for years, and I can tell you that this is not just a “business” to him. He truly cares that the job is done correctly so that hopefully people don’t have devastating incidents down the road. Serving his long career as a firefighter and then chief, he’s seen firsthand the losses suffered from things we might sometimes take for granted such as chimney buildup or lint in dryer vents.
