Certified Firebox Panel Replacement for Prefab Fireplaces

Refractory Panel Installation

If the panels lining your prefab firebox are cracked, warped, or crumbling, they’re no longer doing their job. Refractory panels are what keep intense heat away from the metal shell of your fireplace and the framing around it. We inspect, remove, and replace damaged panels with manufacturer-correct or professional-grade panels, restoring your fireplace to safe, code-compliant condition.

The Chimney Sweep has repaired and replaced refractory panels in Dallas-area prefab fireplaces since 1980 — one of the most common firebox repairs we’re called out for, especially in homes with older factory-built units.

What Are Refractory Panels?

Refractory panels are heat-resistant slabs — usually vermiculite, ceramic fiber, or a similar high-temp composite — that line the interior walls and floor of a prefabricated (factory-built) firebox. Most prefab units use four panels: one on each side, one at the back, and one on the floor. They act as a heat shield, keeping extreme temperatures away from the metal firebox shell and reflecting warmth back into the room.

Constant heating and cooling cycles cause them to crack, warp, or crumble over time — and once damaged, they no longer protect the surrounding structure the way they’re supposed to.

Why Dallas–Fort Worth Homeowners Need Refractory Panel Replacement

Insurance & Code

Meets insurance and manufacturer requirements

Many manufacturers and insurance policies require panel replacement once damage crosses a safety threshold — we document it either way.

Fireplace Performance

Keeps your fireplace burning efficiently

Worn panels reflect less heat back into the room, so your fireplace works harder for less warmth.

Heat Damage

Protects your home from hidden heat transfer

Damaged panels let heat reach areas of the firebox that were never designed to handle it, which is a real fire risk over time.

Cracked Panels

A cracked panel isn't cosmetic

The Chimney Safety Institute of America's own guidance flags a panel for replacement once a crack is wide enough to fit a nickel on edge — a standard most manufacturers and insurers follow too.

Our Refractory Panel Installation Process

A same-day fix for one of the most overlooked parts of a prefab fireplace.

01.

Firebox Inspection

We examine your firebox, document the damage, and identify the exact make, model, and panel sizes needed.

02.

Panel Sourcing

We source factory-correct panels when available, or professional-grade panels cut to match your firebox specifications.

03.

Removal & Fit

We remove the damaged panels and install the replacements using high-temp adhesives and bracing rated for firebox conditions.

04.

Safety Verification

We check airflow, clearance, and fire safety performance before we call the job complete.

05.

Final Walkthrough

We confirm the fit and finish with you and answer any questions about care or expected lifespan.

Most refractory panel jobs are finished in a single visit. If your firebox needs more than new panels — a damaged damper, a gas line, or a full inspection — see our damper installation & repair and safety inspections pages.

Signs You Need New Refractory Panels

Any of these are worth a professional look before your next fire — damaged panels are one of the more common reasons a prefab firebox fails an insurance or resale inspection. We handle refractory panel repair and replacement with the same care we bring to a new install: inspected, documented, and signed off before we leave.

Refractory Panel Installation Questions, Answered

The most reliable test: if a nickel fits on its edge into a crack, or the surface has worn down more than about a quarter inch, it's time to replace the panel — a standard most manufacturers and insurers use.

Cost depends on how many panels need replacing and whether manufacturer-specific panels are available for your model. We provide firm, written pricing after an in-person inspection.

We don't recommend it. Panels have to be cut and fitted precisely to maintain the firebox's heat rating, and using the wrong material or thickness can create a real fire risk.

No — panels are installed inside the firebox where they're normally hidden by the fire itself. The exterior of your fireplace won't change.

With regular use, most panels last 10–15 years before cracking or wear becomes noticeable, though heavy use or a poorly sized firebox can shorten that.

These guys are awesome, and I highly recommend them. I’ve known the owner for years, and I can tell you that this is not just a “business” to him. He truly cares that the job is done correctly so that hopefully people don’t have devastating incidents down the road. Serving his long career as a firefighter and then chief, he’s seen firsthand the losses suffered from things we might sometimes take for granted such as chimney buildup or lint in dryer vents.
