Most gas fireplace owners assume they’re off the hook when it comes to maintenance. No wood. No smoke. No creosote. What’s there to clean?
Quite a bit, actually.
Gas fireplaces don’t produce the same kind of buildup that wood-burning fireplaces do — you’re right about that. But they do collect dust, debris, and residue over time, and the materials inside your firebox take a beating every season. That’s why we offer a service specifically designed for gas log owners: the Gas Log Refurbish.
Think of it as a chimney sweep for your gas fireplace. It’s the maintenance your system needs, even if it doesn’t need a traditional sweep.
What Happens During a Gas Log Refurbish?
The process is thorough, and it makes a visible difference.
We start by removing all of the gas logs and the materials arranged around them — the decorative media, lava rocks, ember bed, whatever your setup includes. With everything out of the firebox, we clean each piece individually, removing the dust and residue that accumulates from regular use.
Then we get down to the brick underneath. Over time, dust and debris settle into the base of the firebox in ways that are hard to see — and impossible to address without fully clearing everything out first. We clean the brick surface, removing the buildup that collects beneath the logs.
Once the firebox is clean, we reassemble everything fresh. New materials go down, and the logs are reset properly — positioned the way they were designed to be, which also helps your fireplace look its best.

So Why Does a Gas Fireplace Need This?
Because “gas” doesn’t mean “maintenance-free.”
Every time your fireplace runs, fine dust and particulates settle into the firebox. The materials that make your gas fireplace look realistic — the sand, ember glow media, and decorative elements — break down gradually over time from the heat cycling. And the logs themselves can shift out of position, which affects both the appearance and the performance of your fireplace.
A refurbish addresses all of it at once.
How Often Should You Schedule One?
Our gas log customers typically have this done once every one to two years, depending on how frequently they use their fireplace. If your fireplace sees a lot of use through the winter months, an annual refurbish keeps everything looking and functioning the way it should. If you use it more occasionally, every other year tends to be sufficient.
The honest answer? If you can’t remember the last time it was done, it’s probably time.
It’s Also a Good Chance to Catch Anything Else
One of the underrated benefits of a refurbish is that it gives a trained technician a close look at your entire setup. With the logs and media removed, we can see the condition of the firebox, check for anything that looks out of the ordinary, and let you know if anything else needs attention.
That kind of proactive check is much easier — and less expensive — than diagnosing a problem after the fact.
